The Mavericks of UT-Arlington gave Texas A&M a challenge, but eventually fell to the No. 14 Aggies 69-55 in a rematch of a first-round matchup in last season's NCAA Tournament.
UTA held an eight-point lead with less than 7 minutes left in the first half, but A&M went on a 17-4 run and took a 34-29 lead into the locker room at the break. The Aggies never let the lead get any smaller than that.
Neither team shot the ball well. UTA finished with a 38.3 FG percentage, and A&M shot 40.9 percent from the field. The difference in the game was UTA's hard-to-believe 35 (that's no typo) turnovers.
"They (A&M) are athletic and caused us to turn the ball over," UTA head coach Samantha Morrow said. "I was proud of our effort, but they just forced us to turn the ball over, which cost us the game
A&M junior Danielle Gant led all scorers with 22 points. Freshmen Shalyn Martin and junior Erin Dixon each scored 12 for UTA. The box score had Martin recording a double-double...sort of. She committed 11 turnovers to go along with her 12 points.
