TCU men trail UNLV 36-29 at halftime

Henry Salter, TCU's season scoring leader (14.9 ppg), left the game a little more than a minute into play when he apparently twisted an ankle. The Horned Frogs fell behind UNLV 13-4 but were within 27-26 before the Runnin' Rebels finished the first half on an 8-3 run. Brent Hackett led the Frogs at haltime with 10 points and Keion Mitchem had nine.

Mizzou suspends five after fight

The situation got worse for the Missouri men's basketball program as the day wore on. Missouri coach Mike Anderson suspended five players indefinitely Tuesday after a weekend altercation left his top scorer with a broken jaw.

In a statement from the university, Anderson declined to indicate the reason for the discipline, calling the infractions a violation of team rules.

But the move comes as Columbia police confirmed that several teammates were with senior guard Stefhon Hannah when he was attacked outside the downtown nightclub Athena early Sunday morning. The injury could cause Hannah to miss the rest of the season.

Hannah, who returned home to Chicago following surgery, senior guard Jason Horton (from Cedar Hill High School) and forwards Marshall Brown, Darryl Butterfield and Leo Lyons were suspended. Each is either a starter or a key reserve.

Anderson implemented what he called a “zero-tolerance” policy after junior forward DeMarre Carroll — his nephew — was shot in the ankle outside another Columbia nightclub over the summer. Police said Carroll was a bystander trying to break up a fight.

Along with the injuries suffered by Hannah and Carroll, three other Tigers players have been involved in off-court violence or misconduct since Anderson was hired less than two years ago.

Sutton still searching for win No. 800

San Francisco failed in a third attempt to get interim coach Eddie Sutton his 800th win, losing 66-48 to Santa Clara on Monday night.

Sutton got win No. 799 over Portland on Jan. 19, and he thought the Dons could compete with Santa Clara, a struggling Bay Area rival, after playing fairly well in tough losses to West Coast Conference powers Gonzaga and Saint Mary's in their last two games.

Instead, the Dons (5-15, 1-4) fell behind by 21 points early in the second half of their 10th loss in 11 games overall. Former Texas Tech player Dior Lowhorn scored 22 points.

Missouri's top scorer out 4-6 weeks

Missouri senior guard Stefhon Hannah was released from a hospital Monday, a day after his jaw was broken in a brawl outside a downtown nightclub in Columbia, Mo.

The Tigers' leading scorer is expected to miss at least four to six weeks and could be out for the rest of the season.

Big 12 South foes that have games remaining with Missouri are Texas A&M (Feb. 9), Oklahoma State (Feb. 26), Baylor at Waco (March 1) and Oklahoma at Norman (March 8).

Hannah was injured outside the Athena nightclub early Sunday morning, just hours after the Tigers returned from a 66-62 victory at Colorado. Hannah told police that he was struck on the head by an unknown object by at least one person whom he could not identify, according to a preliminary police report obtained by The Associated Press.

Tigers coach Mike Anderson said the team still hopes to have Hannah back, but he wasn't certain how long Hanna's recovery would take. .

Hannah leads the Tigers (12-8, 2-3) in scoring (14.7 points) and assists (5.1). A junior college transfer, he also led Missouri in scoring and assists last season.

Hannah is the fifth Tiger player to be involved in off-court violence or misconduct since Anderson was hired less than two years ago.

UNT could tweak 2008 schedule

UNT's 2008 football nonconference schedule, while yet to be announced, is set...for the moment.

The 2008 opener at national champion LSU on Aug. 30 could be moving but would require string-pulling. LSU, with one open date, apparently wants to play a TV game on Aug. 30 against a better opponent than UNT. The Mean Green has a Sept. 20 open date, but LSU is playing Auburn that day.

To make this work, LSU might need UNT to move its Sept. 13 game at Rice to some other date, if possible. Currently, LSU is showing a "TBA" in its 2008 schedule on Sept. 13. As for UNT-Rice moving to Sept. 20, that wouldn't work; Rice is at Texas that day according to the Longhorns' future schedules.

Right now, UNT is scheduled to host Tulsa on Sept. 6 and play at Kansas State on Sept. 27. LSU has games against Troy and Mississippi State on those dates, respectively.

UNT has already switched 2008 openers once, completing an agreement with Miami (Fla.) to drop an Aug. 30 meeting at Dolphin Stadium, the Hurricanes' new home starting next season.

UNT should announce its 2008 schedule soon.

Big week for Lady Aggies

When Texas A&M women's coach Gary Blair looked at the schedule before the season, he figured the Lady Aggies would need to be 6-2 heading into a difficult second half of the Big 12 season if they wanted to have a chance at repeating as conference champions.

As the Lady Aggies are 2-4, that won't be possible. Now Blair is looking at what they need to do in order to just make the NCAA tournament.

"I think this is a big week for the program if we want to use the letters NCAA," Blair said. "We need to figure out how to get to 4-4."

The Lady Aggies host Missouri on Tuesday and then travel to Lubbock to play Texas Tech on Saturday. Those two teams have a combined record of 3-9 in the Big 12.

Carter should be OK

Josh Carter, Texas A&M's leading scorer this season, banged his knee in the final minute on Saturday in the 59-56 victory against Oklahoma State and even asked to be taked out of the game. He was briefly replaced by Beau Muhlbach before returning to the game for the final seconds.

"He was hurting pretty bad, there," Turgeon said. "I figured even on a bad knee, he could knock down some free throws for us."

Turgeon expects Carter to be fine for the game against Texas on Wednesday.

OU women beat Georgia

Courtney Paris kept up her double standard with 18 points and 14 points and Amanda Thompson had a bit of a breakthrough with 18 points for the game and two ferocious blocks in crunch time as No. 11 Oklahoma defeated No. 17 Georgia 65-57 in Norman.

Lady Bears go to 6-0 in Big 12

The Baylor women completed the second half of a historic doubleheader at the Ferrell Center in Waco with a 76-56 victory over Nebraska.

Saturday marked the first time both the Baylor men, ranked 25th, and the women, ranked sixth, played on the same day as ranked teams. The Baylor men didn't capitalize on history, losing to Oklahoma 77-71.

The Lady Bears' next game is Wednesday against Texas, which routed Missouri 67-37 Saturday and has found its groove after a slow start.

Saturday's victory was not without an anxious moment for the Lady Bears. Nebraska (15-5, 4-2) led 16-6 early. Once Baylor (18-1, 6-0) surged in front, 19-18, it never trailed again. The Lady Bears have won 11 in a row and 13 in a row at home.

Nebraska is no slouch, having beaten Texas A&M 73-60 and Texas 56-45. But the Cornhuskers trailed Baylor 43-31 at halftime and then fell behind 52-33.

Texas men breeze past Tech

Make that 22 out of 24 for Texas against Texas Tech. And make Rick Barnes 19-2 against the Red Raiders.

D.J. Augustin scored 19 points and A.J. Abrams broke out of his shooting slump with 17 points to lead No. 12 Texas to an easy 73-47 win over Texas Tech on Saturday night in Austin.

Texas (16-3, 3-1 Big 12) held the Red Raiders to 16 points in the first half and kept their top scorer, Martin Zeno, in check. Defended most of the game by Justin Mason and Augustin, Zeno was 3 of 12 shooting for nine points.

Mike Singletary led the Red Raiders (11-8, 2-3) with 11 points, all in the second half. Texas led 28-16 at the break and a 16-6 run to open the second half broke the game open.
