The notion persists that South Carolina will make a run at Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel, whose Sooners take on Louisville at approximately 4 p.m. today in a second-round game.
Here's an excerpt from an article by Seth Emerson of The State newspaper of Columbia, S.C.:
"The talk has swirled for weeks, with various reasons offered for why:
It would get Capel and his family closer to his native North Carolina. The fan support at Oklahoma has not been strong. Capel earns $750,000, slightly less than the women’s basketball coach at Oklahoma.
There are also ties between South Carolina and Capel:
His agent, Dennis Coleman, also represents outgoing USC coach Dave Odom. One of Capel’s assistants, Ben Betts, is the former coach at South Carolina State. Oklahoma’s strength coach, Darby Rich, came to the Sooners four years ago after two seasons at USC.
But there are also a number of reasons Capel would stay at Oklahoma:
Blake Griffin, a 6-foot-10 forward, is a star in the making. Capel has also signed one of the nation’s top high school guards, Willie Warren from Texas. Capel has said he and his wife are happy in Oklahoma."
