Memphis coach John Calipari said free throws would fall when it really mattered, and they did for the Tigers, who made an eye-popping 30 of 36 (83 percent) to blunt any hopes of a Texas comeback in the Tigers' 85-67 victory in the South Regional final Sunday in Houston.
Chris Douglas-Roberts led Memphis with 25 points, and he was 14-of-17 from the line. Freshman guard Derrick Rose had 21 points and nine assists and lived up to his billing.
Texas shot 36 percent from the field, Memphis an even 50 percent, numbers Texas simply couldn't live with. But an Elite Eight exit isn't bad for a team that lost the national player of the year, Kevin Durant, from last season, when the Longhorns went out in the second round.
The Longhorns never led in the game. Memphis was up 18-8, built the lead to 17 and led by 11 at halftime. Texas came out in a box-and-one defense in the second half and cut the margin to 39-34 but Memphis had all the answers, pushed the lead back to double digits and the Longhorns really never got a foothold on the raised court at Reliant.
