Texas extends lead, McCoy still hot

It looks like Texas QB Colt McCoy is emerging as the difference-maker in the team's season opener. McCoy just threw his second TD pass of the night, a 9-yarder to Jordan Shipley, to cap an 80-yard TD march.

Texas leads Florida Atlantic, 21-3, with 9:01 left in the second quarter. McCoy, at this point, is 12-for-12 for 107 yards, including the two TDs.

Of course, Texas also held a 21-3 lead at one point in last year's season opener before limping home with a 21-13 victory over Arkansas State. So this thing is a long way from over ...

Texas OG Tanner injured

Texas OG Charlie Tanner was just helped to the sideline by trainers with an apparent left leg injury. There is roughly 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Texas still leads, 14-3, and has the ball inside the FAU 20-yard line.

Goodson scores again

Mike Goodson added his second touchdown and is nearing 100 yards late in the second quarter as the Aggies lead Arkansas State 14-3. Goodson has 81 yards on 11 carries, scoring his second TD on a 7-yard run around right end. Freshman Cyrus Gray has 24 yards on three carries.

FAU finally scores; Texas still leads, 14-3

FAU just kicked a 31-yard field goal, capping a drive that reached the Texas 9-yard line before bogging down. Owls' QB Rusty Smith has thrown for 188 yards at the 13:24 mark of the second quarter. Smith has connected on 8-of-19, with one interception.

Thus far, Texas is averaging 7.6 yards per play on offense and FAU is averaging 6.9. The main difference is that the Texas defense has forced two turnovers and the FAU defense has not forced any.

UNT deep-snapper injured

Christian Davidson, who deep snaps and helps cover punts, was injured on a K-State punt return and is being carted to the locker room.  Reserve offensive lineman Troy Kokjohn is Davidson's backup, and we should see him soon. By the way, K-State leads 21-0 in the second.

Red Raiders continues to roll

The 12th-ranked Red Raiders continued to pile it on as they went up 21-0 over Eastern Washington with 48 seconds left in the first period.

Tech's third TD came when All-American wide receiver Michael Crabtree hauled in a 4-yard pass from Graham Harrell that capped a 10-play, 90-yard drive. Harrell's two-point conversion pass to Detron Lewis increased the Tech lead to 21-0.

Texas 'D' living dangerously

Texas just stopped the third of three consecutive FAU drives to reach Longhorns' territory with an interception in the end zone by cornerback Ryan Palmer, an Arlington Bowie graduate. The pass by FAU quarterback Rusty Smith was tipped by safety Earl Thomas before Palmer hugged the ball to his chest in the end zone.

Texas has struggled on pass defense thus far, despite making some telling big plays. Smith has thrown for 151 yards in the first quarter, including a 62-yard completion.

Horns up, 14-0

Texas just capped an 80-yard TD march with a 2-yard scoring pass from Colt McCoy to Chris Ogbonnaya. Texas leads, 14-0, late in the first quarter.

McCoy has been sharp thus far, hitting 7-of-7 passes for 63 yards. He also added a 25-yard rush on the zone read to set up the Longhorns' second TD.

Texas' second TD drive was aided by a replay-generated reversal of an on-field call. Initially, officials ruled that Longhorns' TB Vondrell McGee had fumbled the ball and FAU recovered. Instant replay confirmed McGee's knee touched the ground before the fumble, stopping play. The Longhorns kept the ball and scored three plays later.

UNT got its only two first downs to end the first quarter and is driving near midfield to start the second.

Goodson looks sharp for Aggies

Mike Goodson is fully embracing his role as Texas A&M's feature back. Goodson carried four times for 40 yards on the Aggies' opening possession, including a 9-yard touchdown run that put them up 7-3. Goodson also had runs of 6, 13 and 12 yards. Fullback Jorvorskie Lane did not start but came in during A&M's second possession.

The most unique thing about A&M's opening drive came on the second play when the Aggies had three quarterbacks on the field at the same time. Stephen McGee completed an 11-yard pass to third-string QB Ryan Tannehill. Second-string QB Jerrod Johnson was the tight end on the play.

A nice first drive by the Aggies, but the defense is a little spotty so far, giving up 118 yards on Arkansas State's first two possessions, both of which ended inside the Texas A&M 30-yard line.
