I've always enjoyed Texas Tech coach Mike Leach. He definitely marches to his own beat, has a dry sense of humor and often has some unique responses to questions that leave me laughing. Today, Leach was on the weekly Big 12 football coaches' conference call, and was asked by former colleague Wendell Barnhouse about if he wondered why his players' helmets keep flying off upon contact.
"You know, I said the exact same thing on our sideline,'' Leach said. "Ya, I kinda wonder, now that you remind me. I asked our equipment guy what the deal is. There are a lot of them laying around. I don't know if it's a new brand, or if there's some special contraption being on them or what. I thought the same thing."
When asked if he worried about injury concerns, Leach replied, "Well ya, helmets are supposed to stay on. I don't know. We don't have anybody injured as a result of it, but I did get tired of people picking up helmets all the time."
