Football: Former coach Darrell Dickey was spotted in Albuquerque at the UNT-New Mexico women's basketball game last Tuesday. Dickey is in the job market after Utah State's staff was swept out. He was the Aggies' offensive coordinator. Appears he was in town either interviewing or inquiring about a job under new UNM coach Mike Locksley. The two have never coached together.
Women's basketball: Senior guard Jo Hall has been suspended for an unspecifed violation of team rules. If Hall has much interest in returning, her choice of seating company at Sunday's SMU game -- next to former coach Tina Slinker right behind UNT's bench -- seems a bit awkward. Hall played eight minutes at New Mexico last week before her suspension. Freshman Mansa El has taken much of her playing time. She is the fifth player new coach Shanice Stephens has suspended or seen transfer.
Stadium news: This week, contractors will begin the process of submitting competing bids to build UNT's planned new football stadium, which will open no earlier than 2011. Bid-proposal documents released target February 2009 as the awarding of a final contract and February 2010 as the start of construction. It's another sign that the project could indeed happen after the October passage of a dedicated student athletic fee to help fund the stadium (fee approval by the Texas Legislature is pending but expected). The meter is running on building costs, so the sooner UNT gets a shovel in the ground, the better.
