Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Haywood, a former Texas assistant coach who was born in Houston, has been hired as Miami University's next head football coach.
Haywood has been offensive coordinator at Notre Dame for the last four seasons. Miami decided to pick someone without ties to the university to join what's known as the Cradle of Coaches.
He becomes the sixth black coach at the 119 Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Shane Montgomery resigned as coach last month following a 2-10 season.
The RedHawks went 17-31 during his four seasons. Haywood is with the Irish in Honolulu, where Notre Dame is getting set to play Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl on Wednesday night.
