What a bizarre, messy ending, but Kansas State survived missed free throws to upset Texas 85-81 in overtime behind 44 points from Denis Clemente. Clemente hit two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to pretty much end the hopes for Texas, which was unable to hit a long 3-pointer before the buzzer.
Fred Brown's 3-pointer with 26 seconds left in overtime broke a 79-79 tie. Gary Johnson hit one of two free throws for Texas to make it an 82-80game and UT fouled Ron Anderson on the inbounds pass. Anderson missed both foul shots, but KSU got the rebound and Texas had to foul Jamar Samuels with 9.3 left. He made 1 of 2 and KSU smartly fouled Dogus Balbay before Texas could try a 3-pointer. Balbay hit a free throw to make it an 83-81 game. Clemente then was fouled on the inbounds play and sealed it with a record total for an opponent at Frank Erwin Center.
