A report on the Web site of Lubbock television station KCBD/Channel 11 says that the agents for Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach have made a counteroffer to Tech's last contract proposal that had a deadline of Tuesday attached with it.
The report says the counteroffer "softens ... but doesn't get rid of entirely" the four contract elements that Tech inserted, leading to Leach's decision not to sign the deal.
Those four issues dealt with severance pay if Leach were fired without cause, an increase in the penalty of the buyout clause, informing Texas Tech of a job interview and rights to sell Leach's name and likeness to third parties.
Leach has two years remaining on his existing contact. Texas Tech is offering an extension that would be for five years and $12.7 million, starting with 2009 and going through 2013.
