Texas safety Ishie Oduegwu, who missed the 2008 season because of shoulder surgery, has decided to give up football, school officials announced today.
Oduegwu, a Denton Ryan graduate who would have been a senior this fall, had been projected to start last season before undergoing surgery in August. In addition, defensive tackle Jarvis Humphrey is out indefinitely because of what trainer Kenny Boyd described as a kidney condition that “has worsened and is currently being treated.”
Humphrey will be one of eight Longhorns who will not take part in spring drills, which begin today, because of injuries. Others who will miss spring drills include WR Jordan Shipley (shoulder), TE Blaine Irby (knee), DE Eddie Jones (ankle), DL Dominique Jones (shoulder), DB Kenny Vaccaro (knee), P Trevor Gerland (knee) and deep snapper Alex Zumberge.
Tight end Josh Marshall, an Arlington Martin graduate who missed last season with a shoulder injury, is expected to take part in spring drills on a non-contact basis.
