The university of Oklahoma will issue a statement later today confirming that men's basketball coach Jeff Capel has agreed in principle to a contract extension and pay raise, an athletic department source said.
Capel, who has been rumored for various jobs including Virginia and Arizona, told the Tulsa World in Detroit this morning of the agreement, which must yet be approved by the board of regents, likely next week.
Capel deferred discussion of the contract terms to athletic director Joe Castiglione, but the contract is expected to be on par or better than the $1.55 million deal Missouri coach Mike Anderson reached this week. Kansas' Bill Self ($3 million) and Texas coach Rick Barnes ($2.25 million) are the Big 12's highest-paid coaches. -- Mike Jones
