The East Valley Tribune, a suburban paper outside Phoenix, cited an anonymous source Wednesday afternoon saying Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel was in contract negotiations with Arizona and that his hiring could be announced in "The next couple of days."
Or not.
My source, who knows about these things, discounts the report as "bogus." On all counts.
That's in tune with The Norman Transcript post early Wednesday evening. The Transcript cited its own "source close to the Sooner basketball program" who said Capel had not had any contact with Arizona. Period. That Capel was in town until Wednesday afternoon before heading to Detroit, along to hold Blake Griffin's hardware he will collect for the five major player of the year awards over Final Four weekend.
I know my source. I know the Transcript writer. I have a good idea of his source, though he didn't tell me who. Our sources are not the same. Expect more of the same. Georgia wants him. Speculation Memphis wants him. I fimly believe Capel wants to and will remain at Oklahoma. Said so. I've yet to have any reason not to believe anything he has told me, on or off the record. He was straight about the South Carolina interest last season.
I also believe he soon will be in possession of a new, more lucrative deal. At Oklahoma.--Mike Jones.
