Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, has been selected as the Big 12’s male athlete of the year for the 2008-2009 school year.
Texas’ Destinee Hooker, an NCAA track champion who also competed in volleyball, was selected as the female athlete of the year. League officials announced the honorees today.
Bradford, who will be a junior this season, won the 2008 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award while leading the Sooners to a Big 12 title and last year’s BCS championship game. Bradford led the nation in passing efficiency (180.84 rating), completing 67.9 percent of his attempts with 50 touchdown passes against eight interceptions.
Hooker won NCAA high jump titles during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, becoming the first athlete since 2004 to capture both titles in the same year. As an outside hitter on the Longhorns’ volleyball team, she was a first-team All-American and finalist for the Honda Award, given to the nation’s top player.
