Texas tailback Tre Newton, a redshirt freshman from Southlake Carroll, has been elevated to the starting role on today's updated depth chart.
Newton, son of former Dallas Cowboys' offensive lineman Nate Newton, rushed for a team-high 88 yards on 20 carries in Saturday's 34-24 victory over Texas Tech. Newton leads the Longhorns in rushing (32 carries, 178 yards, 2 TDs, 5.6 per carry) heading into Saturday's 2:30 p.m. game against UTEP in Austin.
Last week, Newton was listed as a co-starter with Vondrell McGee, who started against Tech. Newton moved up to a solo starter today, in part because coaches said McGee "tweaked" his ankle during the Tech contest.
