Texas may not have fulfilled the expectations of its most zealous fans seeking payback against Texas Tech, but the win was good enough to keep the Longhorns comfortably in the second spot of both the AP and USA Today polls.
Of course, Southern California's loss played a factor. The Trojans had closed the gap on Texas last week before falling victim to another Pacific Northwest upset, this time against Washington.
And Oklahoma - remember the Sooners? - have climbed back into the Top 10 in both polls, which means the Red River Rivalry might still carry considerable national prestige come Oct. 17.
Florida remained No. 1 in both polls. Most of the focus from the Gators' 23-13 win over Tennessee was about the possible offensive weaknesses exposed by Vols' veteran defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.
