When big-time Baylor fans Jason and Chelse Hoskins were trying to come up with a name for their upcoming baby, quite naturally it was probably going to have a Baylor twist to it.
After all, Chelse graduated from Baylor in 1995, and Jason grew up in Waco and graduated from Waco High School in 1993. And the couple met while they were both working at a Sears department store in Waco.
So, in honor of Chelse's father, Robert, and the maiden name of Jason's grandmother (Griffin), the Hoskins have decided to name their baby Robert Griffin. That's Robert Griffin _ a.k.a. Baylor's talented sophomore quarterback.
Jason said he originally thought about the name (Robert Griffin) as a joke. But after a second thought.
"It was mainly to honor the two families,'' Jason said. "But the fact that it was Robert Griffin the quarterback, it kind of put it over the top because we're both Baylor fans.
"That's pretty much how we came up with it.''
Robert Griffin, the Baylor quarterback, wasn't sure what to think when he was told Tuesday that someone was going to name their baby after him.
"It's not weird or anything,'' Griffin said. "If they want to name their kid after me, I know there's people that name their kid after Dr. J. (Julius Erving) and a lot of other professional athletes.
"I'm in college, but hey, if that's what they want to do, then I'm fine with that.''
Jason said his wife have already had a sonogram, so they know they're expecting a boy. He said the baby is due around Nov. 8-10.
"Hopefully it's not a girl with a tail,'' Jason said while laughing. "If so, it will be an ugly baby with an ugly girl's name.''
A designer and agate editor for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Jason was asked if any other names came to mind.
"None that we really like,'' he said. "We were thinking Robert Eric, but we didn't like Eric.
"(Robert Griffin) was the frontrunner on the list we had.''
The Hoskins have been married for seven years and have a four-year old son name Roen. But their next son will certainly have an interesting story to tell about how he got his name.
Baylor's Robert Griffin also has an interesting story to tell. After all, Griffin said as far as he knows it's the first time someone has named their baby after him.
