Texas football coach Mack Brown, who had spoken to troops at Fort Hood in April, was notified of the shootings at the military base shortly before the Longhorns' practice, according to a team spokesman

Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Hammond, the commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, was a quarterback at Southern Miss when Brown was beginning his college coaching career. Brown's connection to the military goes beyond that association. He had visited troops in Europe, Iraq and Africa this summer as part of a coaches' tour and praised both the troops and military leadership he met.

Texas had previously scheduled Saturday's game with Central Florida as a salute military veterans.
