Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and receiver Jordan Shipley were selected today as semifinalists for the 2009 Maxwell Award, honoring college football’s player of the year.
In addition, Maxwell Football Club officials announced that Longhorns’ coach Mack Brown is a semifinalist for the 2009 George Munger Award, given to the coach of the year.
Among the 16 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, three players are from colleges in Texas: McCoy, Shipley and Houston quarterback Case Keenum, who leads the nation in passing yards (3,293) and total offense (420.9 yards per game). Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, who has won the last two Maxwell Awards, also is a semifinalist.
McCoy, a Maxwell finalist last season, ranks second nationally in completion percentage (72.0), with 15 touchdowns passes, for the second-ranked Longhorns (8-0). Shipley has caught 64 passes for 777 yards and five touchdowns. He also has two touchdowns on punt returns.
