TCU will begin the season ranked No. 6 in The Associated Press’ college football poll, the highest pre-season ranking in school history.
The AP’s initial Top 25 was released today. Before this season, TCU’s top starting point had been No. 7 in the 1956 AP poll. The Horned Frogs, coming off a 12-1 season, were ranked No. 7 in the USA Today coaches poll, released earlier this month.
TCU begins the season ranked one spot below Texas and one place ahead of Oklahoma by AP voters. Alabama, the defending national champion, claimed the top spot by capturing 54 of 60 first-place votes from panelists.
The Crimson Tide was followed, in order, by Ohio State, Boise State, Florida and Texas to round out the top five. The six first-place votes not given to Alabama went to Ohio State (3), Boise State (1), Texas (1) and Oklahoma (1).
Three schools from the Big 12 cracked the Top 10, with No. 8 Nebraska joining Texas and Oklahoma. TCU, the defending Mountain West champion, was the only current member of that league to crack the poll. No. 3 Boise State will join the Mountain West in 2011 but will compete in the WAC this season.
