Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville has selected Taylor Potts as the Red Raiders’ starting quarterback, school officials announced today. Potts will be the starter when Tech opens the season Sept. 5 against SMU in Lubbock.
Potts, who threw for 3,440 yards and 22 touchdowns last season, edged Steven Sheffield _ a 74.3 percent passer in six games last season _ in a battle of senior candidates to lead the offense during fall drills.
In a statement released by school officials, Tuberville said: “We have a very talented group of quarterbacks and are excited about every one of them. The competition during camp between Taylor (Potts) and Steven (Sheffield) has been outstanding but at the end of the day we can only have one starter. Taylor has done a tremendous job and we feel like he has gotten better each and every day. There is no doubt that Steven has also improved during camp and will still be fighting to take over that starting job every day at practice. That kind of competition will only make us stronger as the season goes along.”
Tech officials said Tuberville and his fellow coaches will not be available for additional comment on the quarterback situation until after Monday’s practice.
