Long time DFW radio personality and the voice of the Dallas Mavericks Chuck Cooperstein has forgotten more about football than probably even Mack Brown or Bob Stoops combined.
So before scouting tomorrow's rather large games - Stanford at Oregon and Florida at Alabama - I placed a call to The Man.
Mac Engel: Tell me about Florida and why they can beat Alabama.
Chuck Cooperstein: They have 12 interceptions and returned three for touchdowns. (Ala. QB) Greg McElroy will turn it over a couple of times and Florida does something. That is the way Florida will win. Florida's offense can't sustain much offensively against Alabama's defense.
ME: Are Florida's passing game problems more of a product of QB John Brantley or his receivers?
The Coop: It's more on the recievers. None of their recievers can run a route. Their hands are questionable, at best. They don't have a Percy Harvin. Andre Dubose was supposed to be but he's not. To beat a Nick Saban team you have to be able to run the ball and Florida doesn't run it well enough. Their offensive line isn't strong enough at the point of attack.
ME: Who wins?
The Coop: Alabama wins the game and covers the spread. I think Alabama covers that by 10 to 14 points.
ME: Enlighten me about Stanford at Oregon.
The Coop: Stanford can do this. Stanford is fearless and they play an NFL style of football against an offense that runs the best spread in college football. What college football has become, Oregon is. This is a tremendous, tremendous game. There may not be a tougher place to play than Oregon. I think Stanford's quarterback is better. I think Oregon's running backs are better. I think Stanford's defense is better. It's a tossup.
ME: What are your thoughts on TCU?
The Coop: From what I can tell, I think Andy Dalton is pressing. He’s trying to do too much. Not necessarily he’s thinking, 'Heisman.' I think he knows this is his last go 'round and it’s the expectation they have to win every week. I see him not playing fast and loose and it's getting him into trouble. I think they are capable of going 12-0.
ME: You see them getting into the BCS?
The Coop: I love their team. But the thing is they need people to lose and the only way to get in is if Boise loses. I don't think Boises loses.
ME: Last year, both got in.
The Coop: I just don’t think they both get bids even if they’re both undefeated. Something is going to happen.
ME: Texas-Oklahoma, the winner is?
The Coop: Oklahoma. I know Oklahoma can score. I don't know if Texas can score. What happens if UT struggles early against a bad defensive team, which OU is? Texas has to spread it out and I don't know if Garrett Gilbert is good enough to do that. But he has to because they don't have a running game. I know you think Iowa is overrated, but Oklahoma is a hell of a lot more overrated than Iowa.
