Texas Tech defensive line coach Sam McElroy, who will call defensive signals for the Red Raiders in Saturday’s TicketCity Bowl, said today he is interested in having that responsibility on a full-time basis.
But he does not view his performance this week as a job interview in efforts to replace defensive coordinator James Willis, who left the staff Sunday to pursue other career opportunities.
McElroy, former head football coach at Tarleton State, said he has expressed his interest in the coordinator vacancy to coach Tommy Tuberville but acknowledged he is only “playing a role for a week” in helping Tech (7-5) prepare for Saturday’s 11 a.m. game against Northwestern (7-5) at the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas.
“I have called a lot of games in my career,” McElroy said. “Coach Tuberville and I have talked. Coach Tuberville will always do what is best for this football program.”
Tuberville has said he may not fill the coordinator vacancy until mid-January, after interviewing candidates following bowl season.
