Because of a promising weekend weather forecast, Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberbille has moved up the start of the Red Raiders’ spring football workouts to Friday. School officials announced the move today.
Tech will be the first Big 12 school to open spring football drills, with the spring game set for March 26 in Lubbock (1 p.m., Jones AT&T Stadium). Tech’s spring session will feature an open quarterback competition between three returnees from last season (Seth Doege, Jacob Karam, Scotty Young) and 2011 signee Michael Brewer, who enrolled in January.
Tuberville said he wants to get an early start to spring drills in an effort to avoid repeating the cycle of “lingering injury issues that we dealt with last fall” when multiple players, including both senior quarterbacks, sustained injuries during spring drills. Tech’s first workout will be Friday afternoon in Lubbock. The Raiders return 52 lettermen, including 15 starters (7 on offense, 8 on defense) from an 8-5 team.
