The thing I hate most about coaching searches? Tracking down rumors reported as fact, citing sources who don't know what they're talking about.
For instance, reports that Texas A&M has contacted University of North Texas basketball coach Johnny Jones. Now, I'm not saying they shouldn't; but they haven't. At least if you put any stock in the word of UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal--which i do.
Villarreal said no one from A&M has contacted him to ask permission to talk to Jones as of mid-morning Friday, adding that no one has contacted Jones, either.
"Johnny and I had dinner (Thursday) night and we talked about A&M," Villarreal said. "I told him no one had talked to me and asked if anyone had called him. He said no. And he would have told me anyway."
Add Louisiana-Lafayette coach Bob Marlin to those supposedly contacted, but have not been. This from a department spokesman speaking for the athletic director.
There are all sorts of other names circulating out there, but until it looks like there's something serious, I'm not playing the game.
I do know as reported that as of last night, Colorado's Tad Boyle has decided to stay home. I hear some other things. When I know something is fact, I'll report it.--Mike Jones.
