BYU shortstop Andrew Law pulled off the first unassisted triple play in Mountain West Conference tournament history in the Cougars 8-2 win over San Diego State Thursday. With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Law lost a shallow pop up off the bat of Jomel Torres’ bat just beyond the dirt in left field in the sun as umpires called the infield fly rule. Law continued to react as if he was under the ball for the catch.
The runners on second and first took off when they saw the ball hit the ground. Law tagged Cody Smith between second and third and then tagged out Pat Colwell Smith trying to get back to first.
"As it unfolded I started to think, ‘This might work out,’ Law said. "When it came off the bat I was thinking that we had an infield fly rule situation for sure, so I got under it. But as I did, the ball was going into the sun, so I acted like I had it. I waited for the umpires to call the infield fly, then I saw (the runners) take off."
