Texas receiver Marquise Goodwin, who won the national title in the long jump at the 2011 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships, will redshirt during the 2011 football season and concentrate on competing as a track athlete in the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games.
School officials made the announcement today. Goodwin, who will compete at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, Korea (Aug. 27-Sept. 4), will remain on a football scholarship and return to the team as a redshirt junior for the 2012 season. The 2012 Olympics are scheduled July 27-Aug. 12 in London.
In a statement issued by school officials, Goodwin said the opportunity to pursue a world championship and an Olympic medal in track “are dreams of mine” but he plans to “be around football as much as possible” while doing so.
Goodwin has played in 23 football games for Texas, with nine starts. He has 61 career receptions for 603 yards (9.9 yards per catch) and two touchdowns. Including rushes and kick returns, he has 1,461 all-purpose yards during his college career.
