Texas football coach Mack Brown said Friday’s second scrimmage of fall drills projects to play a “huge” role in setting the team’s depth chart for its Sept. 3 opener against Rice (7 p.m., Austin).
Brown said today that coaches have identified approximately 13 offensive players and 17 defensive players they feel comfortable listing on a two-deep list. Although there is no established starter at quarterback, Brown indicated the field is thinning in the four-player race between incumbent Garrett Gilbert, Case McCoy, Connor Wood and David Ash.
“I don’t think we’ve had equal snaps in a while, really, at quarterback,” Brown said without elaborating.
Four of Texas’ veteran players praised the fall progress of Ash, an incoming freshman, during Tuesday’s news conference in Austin.
