TCU coach Gary Patterson doesn't expect anything too serious when quarterback Casey Pachall's MRI test results come back Wednesday.
"We don't think it's a big deal," Patterson said after Wednesday's morning scrimmage at Amon G. Catter Stadium. "I don’t expect to see anything."
Pachall has missed the last three practices, including Wednesday's scrimmage, with shoulder soreness. He was suited out the last two days but did not throw, according to Patterson. Pachall told Patterson the soreness is from a hit he sustained during a practice, but Patterson isn't so sure.
"I can’t find anywhere on film when he was hit, but he says he was," Patterson said.
Pachall is set to replace four-year starter Andy Dalton as the Horned Frogs' starting quarterback. He has looked extremely sharp passing and running the ball since camp opened Aug. 4. He even received some praise from Patterson for showing leadership on the field since camp opened. Patterson had been critical of Pachall's lack of leadership before camp opened.
The MRI is likely a precautionary move just to make absolutely sure there is nothing serious. It also gives co-offensive coordinators Justin Fuente and Jarrett Anderson more time to look at redshirt freshman Matt Brown and true freshman Trevone Boykin. Both have been battling for the right to backup Pachall. Brown has the edge with a tad more experience, but Boykin has impressed Patterson with his leadership qualities and raw talent.
