Gary Patterson was named the top coach in the country in an ESPN The Magazine poll of 55 college coaches. Patterson, in his 11th year at TCU, was the choice of 23.1 percent of the voters (11 head coaches, 44 assistants). Alabama's Nick Saban received 19.4 percent of the vote.
“Obviously, I take it as a compliment to my group [of coaches] and for TCU and Fort Worth,” Patterson said. “We’re only as good as our last game, but I appreciate it.”
Patterson is 98-28 since moving from defensive coordinator to head coach before a bowl game in Dec. 2000. The Frogs average final ranking of No. 5 the last three seasons leads the nation. TCU opens the 2011 season at Baylor at 7 p.m. Sept. 2.
