Texas coaches made major changes today to the depth chart for Saturday’s game against UCLA, naming quarterbacks Case McCoy and David Ash as co-starter and elevating freshman tailback Malcolm Williams to a co-starter role with senior Fozzy Whittaker.
Garrett Gilbert, who has posted a 7-7 record as Texas’ starting quarterback for the past two seasons _ including Saturday’s 17-16 victory over Brigham Young, when Gilbert was benched in the second quarter _ was listed as the third-team quarterback.
In addition, junior Marquise Goodwin is listed as the new starter at one receiver spot, replacing John Harris. Goodwin, the reigning U.S. Outdoor champ in the long jump, returned to the team last week after changing plans to redshirt this season while focusing on trying to make the 2012 U.S. Olympic track team.
Texas coach Mack Brown said: “We make decisions based on what’s working. If it’s not working, we change it up to give us a spark.”
No. 24 Texas (2-0) heads to UCLA with its top two quarterbacks having combined to throw a combined 15 passes at the college level.
