Big 12 officials have completed the league’s 2012 football schedule, which features 10 schools _ including TCU and West Virginia _ officials announced today.
The schedule has been passed along, per contract requirements, to the league’s television partners from Fox Sports and ABC/ESPN and will be released publicly “in the near future,” based on a statement circulated by Bob Burda, the Big 12 associate commissioner/communications.
The league faced a Feb. 1 deadline in providing a football schedule for its TV partners. In the statement, league officials said: “The Big 12 Conference has provided a ten-team 2012 football schedule to its television partners and expects to release it publicly in the near future.”
The timing of the public release could be impacted by West Virginia’s ongoing legal battle with the Big East in regard to the school’s departure date. West Virginia has announced plans to join the Big 12 in July.
Big East officials have said they plan to keep the school in its current league until 2014, per Big East bylaws. A Rhode Island judge has ordered West Virginia and the Big East to ender nonbinding mediation to resolve their competing lawsuits. An update is expected by Feb. 9.
Big 12 officials offered no specific timetable for the public release of the 2012 schedule but all signs point to next week. In an e-mail, Burda ruled out today as a possible release date because of National Signing Day.
“Given the significance and interest in National Signing Day, our intent is to avoid releasing the schedule on Wed., Feb. 1,” Burda wrote.
