San Diego State coach Tony Gwynn did not travel to Fort Worth for this weekend's series at TCU. Gwynn has been recovering from surgery in which a cancerous tumor was removed from his cheeck. He missed 10 games before Tuesday's Aztec game with Loyola Marymount. But Gwynn left after four innings.
Gwynn missed the first part of the season while recovering from an initial surgery and returned to the team March 23. He coached 21 games before undergoing the second procedure. Assistant coach Mark Martinez is acting as the Aztecs' head coach in Fort Worth. The North County Times reported that Gwynn still hopes to reunite with his team at the Mountain West Conference tournamenet May 24-27 in Las Vegas.
San Diego State and TCU conclude the regular season with three games this weekend. Game 1 is at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Horned Frogs need to sweep the series to win their seventh MWC title in seven seasons in the league. TCU moves to the Big 12 Conference next season.
