TCU associate head baseball coach Randy Mazey will be named head coach at West Virginia Wednesday, several sources have confirmed. Mazey, who has been a Horned Frog assistant since 2007, was twice a head coach before at Charleston Southern from 1994-96 and at East Carolina 2003-05 where he compiled a 120-66-1 record. Before TCU he had been an assistant at Clemson (his alma meter), Georgia, and Tennessee. West Virginia and TCU move into the Big 12 Conference next month.
Mazey’s son, Weston, 5, has been a Frogs’ bat boy the last two seasons. It became a postgame ritual for Weston to run the bases and slide into home to a chorus of cheers after TCU home games. Mazey will remain with TCU through its postseason. The Frogs (40-20) open their Super Regional series against UCLA (45-14) at 8 p.m. Friday in Los Angeles.
TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle has lost two assistants in the last three years. Todd Whitting took the head job at Houston after the Frogs played in their first College world Series in 2010.
