Former TCU long jumper Whitney Gipson was named the Mountain West Female Athlete of the Year Thursday after winning NCAA titles in the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the spring.
Gipson, who tries to make the U.S. Olympic team this weekend in Eugene, Oregon, is the first female TCU athlete to earn the award and first since Jerry Hughes won it after an All-American football season in 2009.
Gipson is TCU’s first female to win an NCAA track and field title and the fourth NCAA Outdoor Champion in school history.
She competes in the Olympic trials preliminary round today. The finals are Sunday.
