Big 12 lands eighth bowl spot for this season by adding Jan. 1 game in Dallas

Big 12 officials announced a bowl agreement today with the Heart of Dallas Bowl for a New Year’s Day contest at the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 2013. The agreement provides an eighth bowl spot for the 10-member league this season and will match a Big 12 team against a Big Ten opponent.

Under terms of the two-year deal, the 2014 game in Dallas _ previously called the TicketCity Bowl _ will pit a Big Ten team against a Conference USA opponent. This year’s contest will kick off at 11 a.m. on New Year’s Day in Dallas.

Below is a look at the Big 12’s eight guaranteed bowl spots this season, with conference/BCS opponent tie-ins: Fiesta (BCS), Cotton (SEC), Alamo (Pac-12), Buffalo Wild Wings (Big Ten), Holiday (Pac-12), Meineke Car Care (Big Ten), Pinstripe (Big East) and Heart of Dallas (Big Ten).
