Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, and TCU defensive end Devonte Fields, an Arlington Martin graduate, were among eight players with Texas connections selected to the 2012 Freshman All-America team by the Football Writers Association of America.
The 30-member squad, announced today, recognized only first-team honorees and included Texas Tech offensive lineman Le’Raven Clark, Houston defensive back Trevon Stewart and San Jose State kicker Austin Lopez, a Euless Trinity graduate.
Other players from Texas high schools who made the team included UCLA offensive lineman Jake Brendel (Plano), Boise State defensive lineman Samuel Ukwuachu (Pearland) and Colorado State linebacker Cory James (Del Rio).
