"No. 10 Oklahoma (33-12, 10-5 Big 12) faces West Virginia (27-19, 9-6) in a three-game weekend series at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W. Va. The Sooners hold their first-place winning percentage over Baylor by a margin of 2 percent. The Mountaineers sit fourth, tied with Kansas State with the league's third best record, despite being picked to finish last in their debut season in the conference. ..."
West Virginia was picked by Big 12 coaches to finish last in the league, but Sooners coach Sunny Golloway says the Mountaineers have thrived and "are absolutely loose as a goose and that's how you like to play this game."
Last June, as the former Big East member began its realignment transition, the school snatched Randy Mazey, a six-year assistant from the other Big 12 newcomer, TCU, to lead the course.
Golloway: "They've got a coach who knows our league. A coach who has competed. A coach that went in with TCU and won a Super Regional in Austin. So he clearly had no fear and had his guys have no fear. So that's why they're sitting where they are right now."
More Golloway: "Randy Mazey ran the offense for TCU. You get people's approach, their offensive approach. High-energy guy. He's a guy who believes you've got to get in the box and swing at the first pitch. There is no take at any time. They believe you've got to hit the ball to score...if it's close, swing. It's worked really well."
