Texas A&M’s 2014 football schedule will feature several unique firsts, including a pair of Thursday games against Southeastern Conference opponents to bookend the season.
The Aggies’ regular-season finale will be a Thanksgiving game in College Station against LSU. A&M will open Aug. 28 at South Carolina, a Thursday night contest that will mark the first telecast by the new SEC Network that launches next year in conjunction with ESPN.
A&M also will play its first neutral-site conference game during its SEC era, meeting Arkansas on Sept. 27 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
The announcements came in conjunction with release of the 2014 SEC schedule by league officials. A&M has not completed the non-conference portion of next year’s slate but an announcement is expected soon.
In terms of 2014 conference games, the Aggies will have three home dates in College Station against Mississippi (Oct. 11), Missouri (Nov. 15) and LSU (Nov. 27). The road schedule includes games at South Carolina (Aug. 28), at Mississippi State (Oct. 4), at Alabama (Oct. 18) and at Auburn (Nov. 8).
The neutral-site matchup against Arkansas marks the return of that game to Arlington after a two-year hiatus. The teams have played three of a scheduled 10 games at the facility under an agreement that began with the 2009 contest.
The matchup against LSU marks the first time for the Aggies to play a Thanksgiving contest against an opponent other than Texas. The game, which has yet to be assigned a kickoff time, could emerge as an ESPN national telecast. Regardless of start time, athletic director Eric Hyman said school officials are happy with the opportunity to cap the season against an SEC rival in a high-profile setting.
“Texas A&M and LSU … has all the trappings of a great rivalry,” Hyman said in a statement issued by school officials. “Passionate fans bases, bordering states, close proximity, unmatched traditions and history. College football’s rivalry weekend is the perfect home for the Aggies and Tigers.”
