DALLAS -- Oklahoma trailed by as many as 16 in the first half and held a one-point lead with six minutes left, but pulled away at the end for an 82-73 victory over Alabama in the first game of Friday's Tip-off Showcase tripleheader at the American Airlines Center.
“Most games are going to be decided in that 3-to-6 minute area [at the end],” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said of his team’s 15-7 run to finish the game. “That’s a critical part of the game. Made a couple big shots there and then I thought the defense guarded well, got some big rebounds.”
Forward Ryan Spangler, a transfer from Gonzaga making his Sooners debut, recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Buddy Hield was the leading scorer with 19 points, while Arlington Grace Prep product Je’lon Hornbeak finished with eight points in 21 minutes.-- Drew Davison
