Two of Texas’ key starters, running back Johnathan Gray and defensive tackle Chris Whaley, will undergo season-ending surgeries for injuries sustained in Saturday’s 47-40 victory over West Virginia, team trainers announced Sunday.
Gray, a sophomore from Aledo who leads the team in rushing (780 yards, 4 TDs), injured his Achilles. Whaely, who has scored two touchdowns this season via returns (one interception, one fumble), injured his knee.
The Longhorns (7-2, 6-0 in Big 12) hold a half-game lead in the Big 12 standings over Baylor (8-0, 5-0) heading into Saturday’s games, which will be part of a nationally televised doubleheader on Fox. Texas meets Oklahoma State (8-1, 5-1) in Austin (2:30 p.m., KDFW/Ch. 4) and Baylor meets Texas Tech (7-3, 4-3) at 6 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington (6 p.m., KDFW/Ch. 4).
