Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, joined Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston among six finalists invited Monday to New York for Saturday’s live announcement of the 2013 Heisman recipient.
Other invitees among the largest group of Heisman finalists since 1994 include Auburn running back Tre Mason, BostonCollege running back Andre Williams, Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron and Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch. Winston, a redshirt freshman who has top-ranked Florida State (13-0) headed to the BCS National Championship Game, has been the runaway favorite in Heisman straw polls the past two weeks.
Manziel, selected Monday as the first-team All-SEC quarterback by the Associated Press, also is one of five finalists for the inaugural Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, given to college football’s top offensive player with a Texas connection (high school or college). Other finalists include A&M receiver Mike Evans, Missouri quarterback James Franklin, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty and Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro.
