Beer and wine will begin to be sold at University of Texas athletics events Friday, the school announced Thursday afternoon, starting with the Texas Invitational, which is hosted by the Longhorns softball team. It has a doubleheader against Louisiana-Monroe and Southern Miss beginning at 4 p.m. this Friday.
After the seasons for spring sports are over this year, the Texas athletics department, police department, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and Sodexo Sports and Leisure, the UT athletics concessionaire will meet to evaluate how effective and safe selling beer and wine has been. Following that evaluation, they will decide whether to continue selling alcohol at other events, including football, although there will not be beer or wine sold at the Texas spring football game April 19.
"This trial will be in effect this spring for all remaining men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball games, and the fan fest area at the Texas Relays," Texas men's athletics director Steve Patterson said in a statement. "We could look into expanding it for other sports events next fall provided the outcome of the trial is positive."
The Texas men's basketball team plays its next home game next Wednesday against TCU while the Longhorns women's basketball squad hosts Oklahoma State next Monday. The Texas baseball is in Houston this week before returning to Disch-Falk Field for a home game against Valpariso.
