As the Big 12 tournament's top seed and winners of 10 consecutive regular season conference titles, Kansas, as it usually is, is the odds-on favorite to win the Big 12 tournament.
But the Jayhawks will be without 7-footer Joel Embiid this week as he recovers from a back injury and he is likely to miss the first week of the NCAA Tournament. Whatever happens in Kansas City this week, the NCAA Selection Committee will take Embiid's absence into consideration when deciding where to place the Jayhawks.
"I can assure you, in any situation, whether it regards an injury or an overall evaluation of a team, the committee not only looks at the victory or the won-loss record, we look at how the team played, where they played that particular team," said Selection Committee chairman Ron Wellman. "It will be a deep evaluation."
Kansas opens Big 12 tournament play Thursday against the winner of Wednesday's Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game.
