Tee times set for Tuesday's North Texas College Shootout, with top two finishers to join LPGA field

Participants in the North Texas Collegiate Shootout, which will send two college golfers into the field for North Texas’ upcoming LPGA Tour event in Irving, will take the course at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Las Colinas Country Club.

The top two finishers among the 18 college golfers in the 18-hole competition will earn berths in the North Texas LPGA Shootout, a full-field event scheduled April 25-28 at Las Colinas CC.

Tee times for Tuesday’s competitors:

Texas Tech-SMU football opener moved to Friday, Aug. 30 for ESPN national telecast #RedRaiders, #SMU

Texas Tech and SMU have moved the school’s 2013 football opener to Friday, Aug. 30 as an ESPN national telecast, officials from both schools announced today. The contest will kick off at 7 p.m. at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.

The contest will be Tech’s first game under coach Kliff Kingsbury, who replaced Tommy Tuberville after the former coach took the Cincinnati job in December. Tech will be making its first Friday night TV appearance since 2002, when Kingsbury led the team to a 49-0 victory over New Mexico as the team’s starting quarterback on Sept. 27, 2002.

Texas A&M golfer Mocio, a FW Arlington Heights grad, to join TCU golfers in LPGA qualifier #TAMU, #TCU

Officials at the North Texas LPGA Shootout announced the 18 college golfers who will be competing for two spots in the field at Dallas-Fort Worth’s new LPGA Tour stop, April 25-28 in Irving.

The college participants will play an 18-hole qualifier, dubbed the North Texas College Shootout, on March 12 with the top two finishers earning berths in the LPGA event in April. The qualifier will be played at Las Colinas Country Club, the same venue as the LPGA tournament.

Among the college participants are three golfers from TCU, four from SMU, one from Texas and five from Texas A&M.

The A&M contingent includes Chelsea Mocio, a junior from Fort Worth Arlington Heights. TCU’s threesome is comprised of Alexandria Bonetti, April McCoy and Sanna Nuutinen. Texas’ participant in the qualifier, Madison Pressel, is the younger sister of LPGA participant Morgan Pressel.

Tournament officals also announced Tuesday that two high school golfers will play their way into the field from an 18-player group in conjunction with an April 22 professional qualifier at Las Colinas Country Club. The names of the high school participants have yet to be released.

TCU men's tennis hoping to set attendance mark Friday vs. SMU

TCU men’s tennis is hoping to break an attendance record against SMU at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
To encourage attendance, TCU coach David Roditi has devised up to $2,000 in prizes. The First 500 fans who arrive before 6 p.m. are eligible. Fans can arrive as early as 5 p.m., but not later than 6 p.m.

Best college FB team in Texas? Sagarin Ratings say Aggies, then Horns; both ranked in Top 10 nationally

After Saturday’s losses by Texas and TCU, there are no more undefeated major-college football teams in the Lone Star State. But several have only one loss. So, which team is best?

While voters in both the Associated Press and coaches polls sided this week with Texas (4-1), the No. 15 team in both polls, the Sagarin College Football Ratings selected Texas A&M (4-1). And the computer-generated rankings have the Aggies ranked sixth in the nation, two spots ahead of Texas, in A&M’s first season as an SEC member. TCU (4-1) is 19th.

The Sagarin Ratings, used in BCS calculations, also have five SEC schools ranked among the top seven teams in the country: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 South Carolina, No. 5 Florida, No. 6 A&M and No. 7 LSU.

A pair of Big 12 teams ranked in the Top 10 of both voter polls, Kansas State and West Virginia, come in at No. 12 (K-State) and No. 15 (West Virginia) with Sagarin. K-State is behind No. 11 Oklahoma, a team the Wildcats (5-0) defeated in Norman, Okla. West Virginia (5-0) is behind No. 8 Texas, a team the Mountaineers defeated in Austin.

TCU's Patterson more concerned with early foes than tough final month

TCU coach Gary Patterson keeps hearing about how tough the final month of his first Big 12 schedule is going to be this fall.
But he’s too concerned with the Horned Frogs’ first few opponents to worry about that. After TCU opens the season and its newly renovated Amon G. Carter Stadium Sept. 8 against Grambling State, the Frogs have their Big 12 opener at Kansas at 11 a.m. Sept. 15. 
“Starting with Kansas, and I think all the way through, each one of those games poses a problem and we should approach it like that,” Patterson said. “We've always been a very workman-like group when it comes to ball games like that. Last year was a great example of kind of the mental toughness that our group had.  All the games we had to win, all the Bowl teams in our conference were all on the road.”
TCU is back for a nonconference game against Virginia Sept. 22 and at SMU Sept. 29 before moving exclusively to Big 12 competition against Iowa State at home Oct. 6. The Frogs are at Baylor Oct. 13 and home against Texas Tech Oct. 20 before the schedule is turned up a notch with two road games at Oklahoma State and West Virginia. Kansas State is at TCU Nov. 10 before the Frogs finish at Texas on Thanksgiving weekend and home against Oklahoma Dec. 1.

TCU announces Glasgow, Burns, Haverty moves are official

TCU officially announced Thursday that former safeties coach Chad Glasgow is returning to the Horned Frogs staff. The school also announced, as the Star-Telegram reported Jan. 3, that Rusty Burns has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator. Burns coached TCU receivers the last three seasons. He’ll also coach quarterbacks. He’ll work alongside Jarrett Anderson, who has been co-offensive coordinator and coached running backs since 2009. Trey Haverty, who coached safeties in 2011, will move to receivers.
Glasgow was Texas Tech’s defensive coordinator in 2011 after being hired away from TCU last spring. He coached safeties for 10 seasons at TCU before taking the job at Tech.
Haverty, who was a graduate assistant at TCU from 2007 to '09, was an All-American receiver at Texas Tech from 2001-04. Burns has been an offensive coordinator at six other schools; the last was at SMU from 2004-07.
Justin Fuente, who coached Frogs’ quarterbacks and was co-coordinator the last three seasons, took the head job at Memphis in December.

Texas A&M remains a Top 10 football team in Sagarin rankings; Big 12 schools hold seven of Top 15 spots

Texas A&M has a two-game losing streak, a 5-4 record and received zero votes in the latest Associated Press Top 25 college football poll.

But the Aggies remain a Top 10 team in the estimation of the Sagarin college football rankings, one of six computer-based ranking systems used to tabulate the BCS standings.

A&M, which lost leading rusher Christine Michael to a season-ending knee injury in Saturday’s 41-25 loss to Oklahoma, is No. 9 in the latest Sagarin rankings, published today in USA Today.

The Sagarin rankings REALLY like the Big 12, with seven league schools ranked among the nation’s top 15 teams. In order, the Big 12 members fall this way in the Sagarin rankings, with season records in parentheses:

That places seven Big 12 teams ahead of Houston (9-0), the Lone Star State’s lone undefeated college team. The Cougars, who are 11th in the latest BCS standings, checked in at No. 18 in the Sagarin rankings. Sagarin’s top seven does closely mirror the BCS, with No. 1 LSU on top in both systems and Alabama at No. 2 in Sagarin (third in BCS). The rest of Sagarin’s top seven shows OSU, Oklahoma, Boise State, Stanford and Oregon.

Then we get to Texas at No. 8 – eight spots ahead of the Longhorns’ BCS position – with Texas A&M at No. 9, one spot ahead of an Arkansas team that defeated the Aggies, 42-38, on Oct. 1. The Razorbacks (8-1) are eighth in the BCS standings.

Texas QB Garrett Gilbert announces plans to transfer, reportedly visits SMU

AUSTIN _ Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert, a five-star signee who lost his starting job last month, announced today that he will transfer to another school next season.

Gilbert, a junior who posted a 7-7 record as the Longhorns’ starter and threw more interceptions (23) than touchdown passes (13), has been given an unconditional release from his scholarship by school officials. In a statement, Gilbert said he will remain in school at Texas through the fall semester but will “take some visits while I decide where I’m going to transfer” in the coming weeks.

A website that covers SMU, PonyPride.com, reported that Gilbert attended today’s practice on the SMU campus.

Gilbert (6-foot-4, 218 pounds) lost his starting job after a 2-for-8 passing performance with two interceptions in Texas’ 17-16 victory over Brigham Young on Sept. 10. Gilbert was removed from the game in the second quarter and, on Sept. 20, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.

Because of his injury, Gilbert is eligible to take this season as a medical redshirt under NCAA rules but would have to sit out next season if he transfers to another FBS school. He could be eligible in 2012 if he selects an FCS school.

In his statement, Gilbert called it “a very difficult decision” to leave Texas but said it was “in my best interest” to switch schools. In 24 games, Gilbert completed 305-of-538 passes for 3,301 yards (ninth on Texas’ career list).

Gilbert’s departure leaves the 11th-ranked Longhorns (4-0, 1-0 in Big 12) with only two quarterbacks on scholarship heading into Saturday’s game against No. 3 Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0): sophomore Case McCoy, who is 2-0 as a starter in Texas’ last two games, and freshman David Ash, who splits time with McCoy.

Connor Wood, the other member of Texas’ four-quarterback competition for the starting job during fall drills, transferred to Colorado in August.
