NFL rules prohibited the Cowboys from putting Nick Folk on injured reserve, which would have been their preference. I asked special teams coach Joe DeCamillis if they could have hurt Folk on the plane ride back from New Orleans. DeCamillis laughed.
He knows as well as anyone that Folk is going to be a good kicker in this league again, and he could come back to haunt the Cowboys.
Dallas drafted him with a sixth-round draft choice in 2007. He made the Pro Bowl that season. Folk was as reliable as any kicker in the NFL over the past two seasons, making 46-of-53 tries. That includes 17-of-18 from 40-49 yards and 4-of-7 from 50 or longer. He made big, pressure kicks for the Cowboys, too. Remember the Buffalo game when he hit a 53-yarder as time expired? Or the seven field goals he kicked against Green Bay that season. We started this season talking about his consecutive field goals streak.
Folk just turned 25. He has a long career ahead of him, and the Cowboys are going to be pained every time they see him make another field goal for another team.
"It's just one of those difficult situations with those guys," DeCamillis said. "Most of the time what happens is they go through spells at the start where they struggle, struggle, struggle. Then, all of a sudden, it kicks. Well, for Nick, it started the other way. Everything came real easy, and then he hit a spell where it went back for him, and we just couldn't get him out of it."
Folk had hip surgery in May. It prevented him from getting his usual off-season work, which likely led to some of the problems he has had lately. DeCamillis also admitted he didn't know how having a new holder affected Folk or how having another kicker on the roster might have played into things. The bottom line was the Cowboys finally had to think about the now instead of the future. It was the right move for today. They're playing for a playoff berth, and maybe more, much more. But it might force the Cowboys to use yet another draft pick on a kicker next year. That would be the third time in four years.
