Martellus Bennett released the news that safety Pat Watkins has been cut by the Cowboys. The Cowboys have to make five roster moves by 3 p.m. Tuesday. Apparently, they have begun the process.
Watkins, a fifth-round pick in 2006, was one of the team's best special teams players. But he had a knee injury for much of training camp, and the Cowboys were encouraged by the play of their young safeties -- Mike Hamlin, Danny McCray and Barry Church. The Cowboys weren't going to pay Watkins $1.176 million when they can pay those players less to do the same job.
Bennett tweeted that "they released my best friend this morning."
Two of the moves are expected to be procedural, with John Phillips (knee) going on injured reserve and Stephen Hodge (knee) onto the physically unable to perform list.
