Rookie free agent Danny McCray has turned some heads with his play so far during training camp and the first preseason game. If he can continue to play like he has so far, McCray has a good shot to make the final roster.
"I think anytime a free agent comes in and shows you some things, [it's a surprise]," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. "He can run. He’s got good speed and good toughness, and he did show a lot on special teams. That’s a good start for him. But we want to see it again. We want to see him consistent."
McCray, a free safety who was listed fourth on the team's depth chart for the Hall of Fame Game, had an interception, defensed a pass and made two special teams tackles against the Bengals.
"It feels good at the moment," McCray said. "We have the quick turnaround, so that kind of went down the drain pretty quick. So I'm just trying to keep it up."
McCray made only 13 starts at LSU, but he caught special teams coach Joe DeCamillis' eye with his play on special teams.
"Joe D saw him play special teams at LSU and really didn’t know who he was," Phillips said. "He was looking at some of the LSU players and saw No. 44. Then, it came up that we were trying to get him as a free agent."

McCray is very impressive and was a major contributor at LSU. The Cowboys got a good one when they signed McCray as a free agent.

McCray should make this team. He is very athletic, and a good kid. Looked over at LSU but will stick in the NFL. Very solid skill set.
