With strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh (shoulder) out the rest of the preseason and maybe the season opener, the Cowboys have installed Mike Hamlin into the starting lineup opposite Alan Ball.
Sensabaugh says he will be back for the opener against the Redskins Sept. 12. But the Cowboys medical staff told coach Wade Phillips there is a chance he won't be back until Week. 2.
Hamlin entered training camp competing with Ball for the starting free safety spot. Ball won the job from the outset and Hamlin has been injured. He suffered a concussion against the Raiders, sidelining him for the Chargers game.
But he is now back at practice and got the nod to replace Sensabaugh over veteran Patrick Watkins and rookie free agent Barry Church, who played solidly in Sensabaugh's spot against the Chargers.
