Starting right tackle Marc Colombo suffered a sprained knee in practice on Sunday and all indications are that he will have arthroscopic surgery immediately.
He was sent to the hospital for a magnetic resonance imaging exam. But that was just to confirm the early diagnosis by team doctors, who felt surgery is necessary, owner Jerry Jones said.
Colombo will likely be out two to four weeks following surgery, putting him out for the rest of the preseason but possibly having him back for the season opener on Sept. 12
The timetable is important to the Cowboys which is why they were planning to do the surgery immediatly so he get back on the field as soon as possible.
With backup tackle Alex Barron out with a sprained ankle, it puts the Cowboys in a precarious position for Saturday's preseason game against the Chargers.
They will likely have to go with second-year player Robert Brewester, who missed his rookie season with a torn pectoral muscle, or rookie Sam Young. Young practiced at right tackle Sunday after Colombo was injured.
It's also a huge setback for Colombo who missed seven games last season with a broken left fibula and high- ankle sprain.
